Criminal Justice (CJ) Major

What is This Major about?

The curriculum offered by Athabasca University's Criminal Justice Program will provide you with a variety of courses that address the operation of the adult and youth justice systems, examination of criminal justice policies, procedures and programs, and the roles of criminal justice professionals (for example, law enforcement) and other stakeholders (such as victims and offenders). Our degree teaches students to think critically about criminal justice policies and practices. Students receive academic training that prepares them for career advancement in the field of criminal justice as well as graduate studies.

The general program goals are to

  • provide you with the skills to think critically about criminal justice
  • provide the skills to conduct criminal justice research
  • provide a curriculum that supports career advancement and continued education at the graduate level.
  • provide advanced curriculum in areas such as
    • policing
    • youth justice
    • criminal offending
    • organized crime
    • victims of crime
    • and criminal justice policy and administration
